Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions leader speaks to evolving tech landscape

Dickinson recently welcomed back to campus Susan Miller '81, president and CEO of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), as part of the Burgess Institute for the Global Economy's Executive-in-Residence program.

Miller's visit not only inspired students but also reinforced the value of a Dickinson education in fostering adaptability and curiosity—qualities essential for success in today's dynamic global economy.

“I was an art history/English literature major with a minor in economics,” she said, “and guess what? I'm running a technology company."

During her visit, Miller engaged with students through a series of events, including career sessions and office hours, providing invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of technology and business. Reflecting on her own journey as a first-generation college student, Miller emphasized the transformative power of her Dickinson education.

"It really taught me to be curious, the importance of being authentic, how to go after things that I wanted to do," she said. “Dickinson opens the world for you. This is where it's at. You're in a really good place at the right time."

Launched this fall, the Burgess Institute for the Global Economy provides practical learning experiences, mentorships, industry experiences and networking opportunities to prepare students  for successful futures in business and finance—no matter what major they're pursuing.
